Uses of Past Continuous Tense


USE 1: Longer Action interrupted by shorter action in past.

In the situation of interruption, past continuous tense id used for longer action and simple past tense is used for shorter action.

I was reading a book, when door knocked.

USE 2: Continued action in past at a specific time.

This tense is used for the continued action in past at a specific time.

Last night at 6:00 PM, I was watching movie.

USE 3: Parallal Actions in Past.

This tense is used to describe the several actions that were happening at the same time or describe an atmosphere.

We were sitting on balcony, taking tea, watching sunset, and discussing nature.

USE 4:Repetition and Irritation with 'Always' or 'Constantly'. She was constantly pinching.
